Skincare for Teens

Linda Xie

Hi, this is your local acne prone teenager, Linda. As puberty slams us like a load of bricks, our bodies start changing and one of the most irritating symptoms of growing up are those painful oil filled spots that pop up on our face… pimples.  Just like many of you, I thought I would be safe from pimples, but perhaps God was testing me, because guess what? Those nasty demons appeared on my face. To begin, I’m not a dermatologist and I don’t intend to be one, but my skincare advice is based on my own personal experience and I have enjoyed some success.

Where do pimples come from? Pimples form because of a build up of oil and sweat. Your face is is filled with millions of hair follicles, teeny tiny holes on your face. When these tiny holes get exposed to bacteria and oil, they becomes clogged and form those painful red pus filled bumps. Because of puberty, your body is rapidly changing, producing more sweat and toxins onto your skin. This is the reason behind the outbreak of pimples in this stage of your life.

How to prevent acne:

  • DO NOT touch your face. Your hands are filled with bacteria which can cause pimples to grow
  • Maintain a balanced and healthy diet because believe it or not, delicious junk food can cause acne
  • DO NOT pop pimples. Popping a pimple can form a scar that may last on your face forever. Use trusted skin treatments to slowly make the pimples go away.
  • Use lukewarm water when cleansing your face

My recommended regular skincare routine:

1) ALWAYS cleanse your face with a facial cleanser before and after bedtime. This will help make sure all dead skin, dirt, and bacteria is completely removed from your face.

2) If you have acne use nicinimide and zinc to make it go away

3) Find a moisturizer that will keep your skin hydrated. Some people might say, I have oily skin – do I still need to hydrate? The answer is YES, you should, however, you should hydrate your skin without adding any more oil to your face.

4) Finally, use sunscreen because it helps prevent your pimples from scarring due to the UV rays from the sun.

Skincare treatment recommendations

First identify the type of skin you have. Is your skin oily or dry? This will help you find the right skincare products. I have found success in using products from Curology, a skincare company based in San Francisco. They have had over 3,000 customer reviews on Facebook with an average rating of 4.2 out of 5 and over 9,000 reviews on Influenster.

When you visit the site you will complete a survey about your skin and submit photos that will remain private. Shortly after, you will be assigned a dermatologist who will find you a treatment that is tailor made for your skin. Curology allows free trials and skincare products can be shipped to your home. Forbes contributor Joseph DeAcetis recommends brands such as Kiehls, The Ordinary, and Blu Atlas.

Remember, maintaining healthy skin is a process and you will not see instant changes overnight. Be prepared to invest time and even money if you do care about having healthy skin. It is best to start now before things can get worse. Don’t let those demons torment your skin and your self esteem.
