Encanto, CODA, and The Power of the Dog were the top winners at the 94th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. Jessica Chastain and Will Smith were named best actress and best actor. This was Smith’s first Oscar, but it was overshadowed by his confrontation with comedian Chris Rock. After Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife and G.I. Jane, Smith slapped Rock onstage and later apologized for his behavior during Smith’s acceptance speech. Billie Eilish won best original song for the James Bond song, “No Time to Die.” 15.4 million viewers watched the Oscars this year compared to 10.4M last year.

This year’s Golden Globe Award show was not televised due to the Omicron surge and controversy within the organization of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. NBC cancelled the broadcast following a report in the LA Times about HFPA judges accepting gifts from film studios and film producers and the lack of Black members in their organization.

Sunday night’s winners were announced on social media and on the Globes’ website. The red carpet was cancelled and audience members were prohibited from attending the event at the Beverly Hilton reports Parade. Typically, the Golden Globes is an early predictor of the Academy “Oscar” Award winners scheduled for March 27 this year. The Globes were first to crown Nomadland, Chloe Zhao, Daniel Kaluuya, and Soul before these nominees would later take Oscar wins in their categories in 2021.

Last year’s TV ratings revealed a meager 7 million viewers, the lowest number of viewers in 27 years.

In response to this year’s cancellation, HFPA president has created a new “diversity officer,” added new people of color on the board of directors, added six new Black journalists, and have started a new partnership with the NAACP. On December 13, musician Calvin “Snoop Dogg” Broadus was selected to announce the 2022 nominees. Snoop struggled pronouncing several names including Denis Villeneuve, Ciaran Hinds, and Ben Affleck (called Been Aff-fleck).

Twilight movie sensation, Kristen Stewart, was nominated for her portrayal of Princess Diana in Spencer. Stewart starred as the Princess of Wales, born Diana Spencer, who worked as a nursery teacher’s assistant before being engaged to Prince Charles. Princess Diana supported numerous charities benefiting the homeless, drug addicts, and the elderly.
