The Most Wonderful Time of the Year?

From the Opinion Editor at The Portland Press Herald (2013):

The holidays are pretty much the best time of the year when it comes to people treating each other with dignity and respect. Truly… it’d be wonderful if every month were like December. The Christmas spirit… has its roots in Christ’s compassion for others, that we should treat others as we would have them treat us. But there are non-religious origins, as well. Charles Dickens’ masterpiece, A Christmas Carol, is an enduring example of the Christmas spirit put into practice.

The folks who operate local food pantries at Christmas are true saints, acting as intermediaries between the haves and the have-nots. They certainly show us good examples of the benevolent aspect of the Christmas spirit.

Most everyone seems a little kinder this time of year, a little more tolerant. A walk down any Main Street in the real America will show you people are still full of good.

In ancient times, this time of year had several different versions of merrymaking to mark the Winter Solstice, celebrating the end of six months of growing darkness. While we tend to think we’re very different from people from thousands of years ago, those pagan feasts weren’t so different from our own in that light’s victory over the dark.

Any time good beats out evil is certainly a good reason to celebrate.

I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me ”

— Ebenezer Scrooge (A Christmas Carol)

Most Wonderful Time

This Christmas may be like last year: our family gatherings will require social distancing and we will have to use plenty of hand sanitizer. This year I would like to just relax and focus on myself, because I really need that right now. I have not had the best couple of weeks and I just need a break. I plan on doing lots of yoga and meditation and reading and just disconnecting myself from anyone and anything toxic in my life. I also hope to spend time with my cousins who moved to Davis, in Northern California, a couple of years back. They might visit my family this winter break. My Christmas wishlist: Vivienne Westwood jewelry, Realisation Par dress, Chanel Jewelry, Enhyphen/Twice albums, Dior perfume.

Last Christmas we were together at home and exchanged gifts while being on FaceTime with my aunt and uncle, cousins, grandma and grandpa. On Christmas Eve, we went to get dessert pies and groceries for our dinner. We cooked together, laughed together, and celebrated together.  My birthday is in December so I went to a good friend’s house and had a joyous time with their family.  – Audrey Tamanaha
