Mental Health Today

Safia Young and Zhao Yu Yao

Staff reporters Safia Young and Zhao Yu Yao examine mental health issues today.

Excerpt from the transcript of their audio article:

People won’t admit to having [mental health issues] or they are afraid to ask for help. Some don’t even know they have mental health issues. Mental health issues lead to depression and other disorders. Garvey Asst. Principal Ms. McDonald stated, “Mental health in my opinion is almost more important than physical health. If a student is struggling with mental health, learning and loving is nearly impossible. A child needs to feel safe and supportive and have people to depend on to support them mentally and emotionally as well as academically and physically. We are a complete package and when one is weak they all suffer… Young people with strong mental health, good familial support and structured school life will know the difference between good and bad choices when it comes to those trends. Young people who have broken homes, and mental health issues may follow destructive paths of celebrities [who struggle with mental health issues].”
