The US birthrate has dropped to 1979 levels according to reports from the Centers for Disease Control. More people die every day than are being born, contends the CDC, which means the US is “below replacement levels.” Among White and Black women births dropped 4% and among Latina women births dropped 3% from 2019 to 2020. Amanda Barroso from Pew Research Center suggests that the coronavirus quarantine is largely responsible for the drop in fertility. Pew estimated that there were 300,000 fewer births in the US in 2021 due to the COVID quarantine.

Around the world, Japan, France, and Italy have also reported steep drops in national birth rates.
