In Mr. Richardson and Mr. Navarette’s classes, students learned about the teen sailor, Abby Sunderland, from Thousand Oaks, who attempted to sail around the world by herself. On January 23, 2010 she boarded her 40-foot sloop yacht, Wild Eyes, and began her journey from Marina Del Rey and was forced to stop in Cabo San Lucas. Sunderland sailed pass Cape Horn, the southernmost point of South America, on March 31. She was forced to stop at Cape Town, South Africa on April 24 to repair her vessel. On June 10 she encountered high winds 2,000 miles west of Australia and she was forced to activate her emergency radio beacon. A French fishing ship, Ile De La Reunion was able to rescue Sunderland and help return her safely home.
